Knowing the potential positive impacts technology can have on seniors, both Scott Ranson, CIO of Brookdale Senior Living, and Sarah Hoit, CEO and founder of ConnectedLiving (a company committed to transforming the experience of aging through technology access) saw the value of teaming up to provide Brookdale residents with access to online resources, services and social networking opportunities.

After using ConnectedLiving’s certified Ambassadors to educate and engage seniors in online activities for a successful pilot program in one Massachusetts senior living community, Ranson decided to expand the program to nine Chicago-area communities. First, Ranson had to ensure the communities would have reliable wireless access and ongoing hardware support that wouldn’t burden existing help desk and community staff. In addition, Ranson had to make sure the chosen technology could be adopted by the seniors, and that the solution in place could cost-effectively be expanded from a small-scale pilot program to dozens of Brookdale Senior Living communities across the U.S.

This meant seniors across his nine pilot communities had access to in-house Internet café settings that were equipped with leased HP desktops, touchscreen monitors, large-print keyboards, tablets, printers and web cams.

As a result, both the residents and their families welcomed with open arms the technology and the ability to connect online. Not only were residents able to have greater social interaction, but seniors also experienced the benefits of an improved quality of life and higher satisfaction levels with the communities in which they resided.
